v a M O D E R N was launched in January 2011 to showcase and document architecture, art, and design throughout Virginia and into the extended Chesapeake Bay region. The site is a collective source of well informed posts and resources on architectural design, architects, artists, businesses, and cultural institutions in the Mid-Atlantic, which contribute to or provide creative experiences to the public interested in a modern lifestyle.

Josh McCullar is the editor of v a M O D E R N. He lives in Richmond with his wife and two young children. He is a native of the southern Virginia Piedmont and grew up in a handful of small towns throughout both Carolinas and Virginia. He holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia, and has worked in the region for 10 years on cultural and residential projects, and currently designing a modern corten steel and masonry house in rural Goochland County. He was recently interviewed by the editor of Houzz.com about life, design, and the back roads of the region that inspire his work.

“I am a native of the southern Virginia Piedmont region and grew up in a handful of small towns throughout both Carolinas and Virginia. The rich vernacular landscape of the region’s old mills, tobacco barns, railroad tracks, verdant forests, rivers, streams, and dusty fields have been the backdrop of my life. So for me, architectural design begins with the premise that the act of building is a negotiated engagement with the land and should endeavor to create a sense of place. The origin of this value is that architecture at its very best, strengthens and amplifies the inherent qualities of the landscape, and so the craft of building must begin and end with a respectful stewardship of the site.

What we build must earn its keep, because the most sustainable building is a permanent one.

We should endeavor to create places of authenticity, beauty, lasting value, and sustainability. My goal is to achieve that through an engaging process that is both thoughtful and intuitive, and to build a unique and inspired body of work through a deep commitment to the art of architecture, while providing a high level of focused service to the task at hand.”
